| | The blinking reflex is a fast reflex that helps to moisten and relax the eyes. It is one of the most important reflexes that protects your eyes. Yet, when you are looking at a monitor you stop blinking. For example, you normally blink 22 times per minute, yet when you are focusing on a task like reading you decrease your blinking to an average of 12 times per minute. When you are viewing a monitor you blink as little as 4 times per minute. At this slow blink rate, your eyes become irrated from the tear evaporation and exposure.
