A 2010 study by the American Cancer Society found a direct correlation between the amount of time people spend sitting and mortality rates. The study showed that mortality rates increased by 37% for women who sat for more than 6 hours per day. A Mayo Clinic study shows you can burn an additional 340 calories a day if you spend just two hours of your work day standing instead of sitting. If you were to maintain your current lifestyle, this could equate to a one pound weight loss every ten days (burn an additional 3,500 calories to lose one pound). |

The University of Pittsburgh researcher by the name of April Chambers analyzed over 50 studies of sit stand desks. Much of her studies are focused on occupational injury prevention with a focus on professions that require you stand most of the day. As you might of suspected, she found that standing to long creates swelling in the feet, pain to feet, legs and low back as well as vascular issues. Her conclusion is Stand all day is bad for you and Sitting all day is bad for you also. Common sense that lets us to point of too much of anything is bad for you. As Ben Franklin said moderation is best.
So much of the advertising about sit stand desk goes to far with stating sitting is the new smoking or lose a ton of weight by using a sit stand desk. The truth is right in the middle of those comments. “Sitting all day is bad for you–and standing all day is as well. Sanding all day can create swelling in your feet, pain, and vascular issues. Even thought the study says that sit stand desk may not be a miracle that will provide a complete make over for you they do increase your health. When standing your heart rate increases between 7 to 13 beats per minute and that is positive. And your blood pressure is reduced. Users with low back pain reported more comfort with ability to change work postures from sitting to standing. And that is a huge benefit since low back pain is one of the most frequent reported injury that costs 100’s of millions dollars a year.
